Dear Sally Bolton OBE,

As a huge fan of Wimbledon – from the magic it brings to summer in the UK to the drama on the court – I was shocked to see Wimbledon staff say they were ‘incredibly proud’ of the partnership with Barclays, a bank that is well known as Europe’s worst fossil fuel funder, financing those destroying nature, communities and risking our future.

In 2023 alone Barclays gave $ 9.2bn to fossil fuel expanders, bringing their total since the Paris Climate Agreement to $104.9bn. The UN, the International Energy Agency and thousands of climate scientists clearly state that ending fossil fuel expansion is critical to preventing the worst effects of climate change. And yet Wimbledon state that Barclays passed a ‘very thorough vetting process’ despite its history as a major backer of fossil fuels.

Your partnership with an organisation playing a crucial role in driving the climate crisis – and profiting from it – not only undermines Wimbledon’s wider sustainability policies, but also seriously risks the ability for future generations to experience the magic of Wimbledon.

As a concerned fan, I would like to ask the following questions:

1. If Barclays can pass the vetting process, does that mean Wimbledon finds financing fossil fuels acceptable, given they pose a serious threat to a safe, liveable world and your own sustainability efforts?

2. If yes, how do you justify supporting the Barclays brand when they are facilitating the destruction of some of our most precious ecosystems and driving a devastating climate crisis?

3. If you are unhappy with Barclays, will you be taking action to end your relationship?

In 2023 alone, they pumped $24.2 billion into fossil fuels.
