HSBC & NAtWest:

Two of the biggest banks on the UK high-street have funnelled millions into a company that’s wants new oily operations in our North Sea – despite the clear climate risks and the government backing away from the project.

Rosebank is the UK’s biggest undeveloped oil field. This oil field is a major threat to the UK’s climate targets and our coastal wildlife. Worst still, it won’t lower our bills, save jobs in the North Sea or boost the UK’s energy security. The good news? Campaign groups, Uplift and Greenpeace, have taken the decision to approve the development to court. In August, the UK government declined to defend Rosebank. With the approval on the line, we really can stop this oily development going ahead.

Developments like Rosebank can only happen if they receive the finance in the first place. HSBC and NatWest are two of the biggest banks on our UK high-street and are major fossil fuel financiers. This includes money they’ve funnelled into Ithaca, one of the companies pushing for this dodgy development. Can we really trust our banks when they are backing these climate wrecking companies?
