Europe’s largest financier of fossil fuels – barclays –  is sponsoring Wimbledon this year. Don’t let them sportswash their reputation!

Wimbledon, probably the best tennis tournament on the planet, have agreed to be sponsored by Barclays this year. This is bad for the planet, and bad for Wimbledon’s reputation.

In the past 12 months alone, Barclays has given over $16.5 billion to oil and gas companies – including to the worst expanders of fossil fuels. Barclays is also bottom of the UK list for halting finance to new oil and gas, something the UN, the International Energy Agency and thousands of climate scientists say is critical to preventing the worst effects of climate change.  

Wimbledon have committed to tackling climate change, but their relationship with Barclays – Europe’s worst funder of fossil fuels – contradicts these claims.
